Journey «In the footsteps of the Tolbachik volcano eruptions»

Period of the event: july- september

Duration: 4 days/3 nights

You will be able to walk through the places where you tested the lunar rover, through the vast lava fields, see the cones of "young" volcanoes, climb the cone volcanoes (299m and 278m) After the Northern breakthrough, you will see lava caves and walk through the "dead forest".

In the southwestern part of the Klyuchevsky plateau, south of Klyuchevskaya Hill and the Nameless volcano, two merged volcanoes rise: the active - Flat Tolbachik (3085 m) and the extinct - Sharp Tolbachik (3682 m). Their neighborhood is so close that the sharp top of one is closely adjacent and rises above the flat top of the other. The sharp Tolbachik has a conical shape, the slopes are covered with deep barrancos.

Flat Tolbachik is the only one of all active volcanoes in Kamchatka, during the eruption of which very liquid basalt lavas with insignificant viscosity pour out.
From the top there is a magnificent circular panorama of the volcanoes of the Klyuchevskaya group, mountain ranges and the valley of the Kamchatka River, chains and groups of old slag cones and the cone of the New Tolbachinsky volcanoes that arose as a result of the Great Fractured Tolbachinsky eruption in 1975-1976.
The large fractured Tolbachin eruption occurred on the vast lava plateau – Tolbachin Valley adjacent to the foot of the Tolbachik volcano, through cracks formed above the magmatic hearth located at a depth of 60-70 km. It is represented by the Northern and Southern breakthroughs that occurred at a distance of 18 and 28 km south of the Flat Tolbachik crater. The eruption began on July 6 , 1975 and ended on December 10 , 1976 . For 17 months, viscous basalt lavas were pouring out in the Southern Breakthrough. Vegetation was destroyed in a large area, lakes and streams were covered with ash.
